Semi-Detached House Refurbishment in Coma-ruga

The new homeowners’ objective was to execute a complete renovation of this property under a measured budget, while simultaneously ensuring all interventions delivered substantial improvements in functionality and spatial connection.
We started with a dwelling characterized by a very small, dark kitchen that was physically disconnected from the living and dining area. The original layout also included two cramped bathrooms and five variously sized rooms.
The darkness in the kitchen was caused by a storage room that was interposed between it and the main façade. This arrangement prevented the kitchen from having direct external window access and, consequently, also resulted in poor ventilation. This storage room also housed a dedicated laundry area and utility installations.
The rear façade originally featured two small, covered terraces that were recessed into the construction. This configuration left them minimally exposed to sunlight and, consequently, they were underutilised. Both areas were therefore incorporated into the dwelling’s interior floor area.
In the intervention we carried out, the previous storage room was demolished, along with most of the ground floor’s partition walls. The kitchen now features an ample window opening onto the main façade, enabling it to ‘oversee’ the entrance. It has been extended to connect with the newly created dining area, which, in turn, relates directly to the living room. From the living room, a new access leads out to a well-sunlit rear terrace.
Leveraging the generous volume of the staircase void (‘ojo de escalera’), we designed a cabinet-railing hybrid or ‘mueble-barandilla’ that contributes to the holistic understanding of the house as a unified design.
The entrance area was reorganized to create a reconfigured hall (foyer), where a bathroom was positioned, featuring a high window with frosted glass. This ensures the bathroom benefits from natural light, proper ventilation, and complete privacy.
The kitchen was thoroughly studied to maximize its functionality, incorporating a dedicated breakfast nook/utility area (office) and a series of custom cabinetry designed to conceal and easily access certain utility installations.
The bathrooms were also detailed with great care.
In the living room, the separating element from the dining area—a section of the load-bearing wall—is designed to function as an integrated piece of furniture, a treatment also applied to the fireplace.
